Claude Cowork vs Cabinet: your coworker, or your company's brain

Claude Cowork gives one person a tireless coworker: point Claude at your folders and connectors, hand it a goal, and come back to finished spreadsheets and decks. Cabinet is built on the same conviction, and runs Claude through your own key. The difference is where the work lands. Cowork's work lands in one person's folders and account. Cabinet's lands in a knowledge base the whole company owns.

Choose Cabinet if

  • You want one knowledge base your whole team and its agents read and write together, owned as files.
  • You want AI billed at provider prices through your own keys, on Claude, GPT, or Gemini, instead of subscription caps.
  • Self-hosting, open source, and knowledge rendered as live dashboards are requirements.

Stick with Claude Cowork if

  • You want a personal AI coworker with zero setup, working in your own files today.
  • You already pay for Claude Pro or Max and want agentic work included in the subscription.

Open source · self-hosted · bring your own AI

Cowork is a coworker. Cabinet is the company's brain.

Respect first. Cowork is Anthropic's agentic workspace: launched as a research preview in January 2026, generally available on Mac and Windows since April, on web and mobile in beta since July. Give it a goal and it works across your files and connectors, spawns parallel subtasks, runs scheduled jobs in Anthropic's cloud, and ships real spreadsheets and decks. Anthropic's own data says more than 90% of Cowork use is non-coding work. Cabinet routes to Claude through your own key, so we are the last people to doubt what Claude can do.

Now read Anthropic's docs on what Cowork is for: one person. Projects and sessions belong to each user's account, and team plans add admin controls, not a shared workspace. The work lands as edited files in someone's folders and sessions in someone's account. It runs Claude only, against Anthropic's cloud even in local mode, and it consumes plan allocation faster than chat, with its own rolling usage limit on top.

Cabinet takes the same conviction and gives it company scale. One knowledge base, held as files on your infrastructure, where people and agents work together and the knowledge renders as live dashboards. Any provider's models through your own keys, Claude included. A coworker helps you finish today's task. A brain makes next quarter's easier.

Three things Claude Cowork cannot do

One brain, not many desks

Cowork's projects and memory live with each person's Claude account, per Anthropic's docs. Cabinet keeps one shared knowledge base that every teammate and agent reads and writes, so nobody's research retires with their session.

Deliverables that stay alive

Cowork ships polished files: a spreadsheet, a deck, correct the day they were made. Cabinet renders the knowledge base itself as dashboards and working apps that stay current as agents keep the files beneath them fresh.

Your keys, any model, no plan cap

Cowork runs Claude only, inside subscription limits that drain faster than chat, per Anthropic's docs as of August 2026. Cabinet routes your own keys to Claude, GPT, or Gemini and you pay the provider's price, nothing else.

When Claude Cowork is the better choice

  • You want a personal AI coworker today: install the app, point it at a folder, and it ships finished spreadsheets and decks with nothing to host.
  • You already pay for Claude Pro or Max, so agentic work arrives at no extra cost, with cloud sessions that follow you across desktop, web, and phone.
  • You are equipping individuals, not building a shared company knowledge base, and Claude-only inside plan limits is acceptable.

Cabinet vs Claude Cowork, answered

What is Claude Cowork?

Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agentic workspace, pitched at launch as Claude Code for the rest of your work. It launched as a research preview in January 2026, went GA on Mac and Windows in April, and reached web and mobile in beta in July. You give Claude a goal and it works across your files and connectors, with approval modes, parallel subtasks, and scheduled cloud sessions. Anthropic reports that over 90% of Cowork usage is non-coding work.

Which Claude plans include Cowork and what does it cost?

As of August 2026, Cowork is included with Claude Pro ($17/mo billed annually, $20 monthly), Max (from $100/mo), Team ($20/seat annually), and Enterprise. Cowork consumes plan allocation faster than regular chat and carries its own rolling usage limit. Cabinet is open source and free to self-host, with AI billed at provider prices through your own keys.

Is Cabinet a Claude Cowork alternative?

For different jobs. Cowork is a personal AI coworker that finishes tasks in your own files. Cabinet is the knowledge workspace a whole company owns, where teams and agents build knowledge that persists as files and live dashboards, and it can run Claude through your own Anthropic key. Some people will use both: Cowork for personal deliverables, Cabinet as the company brain.

Does Claude Cowork work for teams?

Team and Enterprise plans add governance: admin toggles, role gating, and compliance capture of cloud sessions. The working model stays individual, though; Anthropic's docs describe projects and sessions as belonging to each user, with no shared workspace as of August 2026. Cabinet starts from the shared workspace: one knowledge base for everyone.

Is Claude Cowork safe for sensitive documents?

Cowork ships real safeguards: Manual and Auto approval modes, sandboxed execution, and enterprise controls. Early 2026 also brought publicized incidents, including prompt-injection exfiltration research and a sandbox escape patched in July, after which Anthropic made cloud execution the default. Either way, conversations are processed on Anthropic's servers. Cabinet's answer for sensitive material is structural: self-hosted on your infrastructure, your own keys, and approval before agents act.

Can Claude Cowork use models other than Claude?

No. Cowork runs Claude models only. Cabinet routes to Claude, GPT, and Gemini through keys you hold, so you can choose models per task and switch providers without switching workspaces.
